Where static lines are formed and are not suitable for treatment with anti-wrinkle injections alone, dermal fillers can lift and support the skin to plump out deeper lines. Dermal filler can also be placed in specific areas to add structure to the face, to lift the skin so that it appears fuller and more youthful. It can also be used to balance asymmetry which can occur as part of the ageing process.
Depending on the area treated, you may see some swelling after the treatment, although not everyone experiences this. Bruising is also a possibility but again, not common. All possible side effects are discussed fully in your consultation before you decide if you wish to continue to treatment and you absolutely are not obligated to continue should these risks concern you.
There have been a few reported cases of filler related blindness across the globe. Current medical research puts this risk at 1:500000. It is caused by the filler gel travelling up arterial branches that lead to the eye when incorrectly injected into an artery linked to the eye area. There are certain areas of treatment that carry a higher risk of this outcome and all known risks will be discussed with you before treatment. Currently it is thought that this outcome is instant and irreversible. Precautions are taken with every injection to minimize this risk as much as possible. With regards to necrosis, current medical research put this risk at 1:100000 and although not a good outcome it can be managed effectively by dissolving filler as quickly as possible to restore blood flow to the affected area. Your clinician should have an emergency kit available at all times should this complication be apparent.
It is not advisable to travel until two weeks after dermal filler treatment due to the possible side effects mentioned of swelling and bruising. You should always follow the aftercare advice to avoid infection risks and other complications you could otherwise cause. Should you need to see your clinician after treatment you wouldn't be able to do this if you are travelling.
Every skin is different and some people have a higher metabolism than others so results will vary from person to person. However, most filler brands state that they last between 12 & 18 months.
It is advised that if dermal filler brands previously injected are not known, then six months should be allowed before any subsequent treatment.
